The Bottom Line

the bird and the bee is a Southern California group with a sunny, warm Southern California sound. And I meant that in only the best way. Check the record out before you freeze.

Pros
  • Mellow, tuneful summer music perfect for breaking the winter doldrums.
  • Unusual, syncopated female vocals.
  • Lush backgrounds may urge you to lie in fields.
Cons
  • Might make you hate winter even more.
  • OK, definitely will.

Description

  • Muti-instrumentalist Kurstin has played with Beck & Robert Moog, and writing with The Flaming Lips, Peaches, & Lily Allen.
  • Inara George is the daughter of Lowell George, frontman of the eclectic 㣪s Southern rock band Little Feat.
  • The record was recorded and produced in Greg's studio in Echo Park, California. Where it was, surely, warm every single day.

Guide Review - The Bird and The Bee "S/t"--Album Review

Fear not. Sunshine is here. the bird and the bee -- who do not use upper case letters in their name (i.e. it ain't my error, man) -- are a new band both from the sunshine state and with a sunshine sound. Essentially the private recordings of SoCal duo Inara George and Greg Kurstin, the bird and the bee's debut self-titled album was recorded over three years in Kurstin's home studio, and it has the kind of intimate sound such a personal project should. The ten tunes on the album, each poppier and smoother than the last, will you give a waft of warm summer breeze that you may be longing for this February. Tunes like "f*cking boyfriend" will have you sashaying across your apartment's frigid floor, just as the album's first single "again & again" will give you ample reason to curl underneath your comforter and pretend you're laying under the sun. That is, if you remember what the sun is these days.

Luckily, the bird and the bee may have just arrived in time to remind you.
