CocoRosie — those oddball, art-school, souers provocateurs— have a new album, their fifth, looming. "Gravediggress," the first single from the record, finds Bianca and Sierra Casady sounding, as ever, like only themselves.
The most-CocoRosie-ish cut is at once achingly beautiful and maddeningly sill, never settling into a simple emotional reading, or tenor. Bianca's voice again leaps through a variety of squeaky, cartoony, play-acting registers; and Sierra's operatic warbles feel, as ever, like solemn soliloquies.
As the song slips and slides across five-and-a-half, freeform-feeling minutes, there's the attendant tinkling percussion trinkets and hip-hop rhythm tracks —music boxes and beatboxers— delivering the same contrasts as their voices. And, forever, that daring sense that anything goes. Photo © Samantha West
