San Diego duo Heavy Hawaii have an apt name: their sound is about taking sunny, beachy, jangly indie-pop and dowsing it under a dark and dreary pall. In 2010, a self-titled EP and a split with Northern Irish miserablists Girls Names introduced them to underground-scourin' listeners; now, they've finally polished off their debut LP, Goosebumps.
Of course, "polished off" is entirely the wrong turn-of-phrase. Heavy Hawaii's heaviness dwells in a claggy, warped, slightly-disorienting lo-fi sound. "Airbone Kawasaki" (whose title is taken from a Terminator 2 trading card!) shows that sound ably: with the moaning vocals of Matt Bahamas contrasting with the so-trebly-it's-almost-shrill guitar of Jojo Keylargo (note: not birth names) in fantastic and near-fatalistic fashion.
