Though terms like 'mixtape' and 'demo tape' are still in circulation, the 'tape' bit is usually figurative; a lexical holdover from the analog days that has no real bearing on the digital realm. In a neat piece of format-specific releasing, New Jersey alt-rock shredders Screaming Females are releasing a new collection of home recordings solely on cassette; Chalk Tape's title speaking of how they're putting home-taping back on tape.
"Poison Arrow" shows their home-recordings ain't so rough. It may lack the pristine attack/decay of last year's Steve Albini-produced Ugly, but the jam hits the right tone; and, as always, Marissa Paternoster's scorching guitar playing and biting riot-grrrl bark are what drives it forward. "Poison Arrow" is far more moody and mid-tempo than your usual Screaming Females screamer; but, I guess that's what between-albums cassettes are for. Photo © Christopher Patrick Ernst
