Alt-rock originators Camper Van Beethoven are releasing their eighth album this week, and comes in the band's 30th year together. La Costa Perdida sounds a lot like you'd expect the semi-casual, half-reformed band to sound three decades in: the early edge and energy of their sound —with its strange interbreedings of punk, ska, Eastern European folk, and chugging college-rock— now feeling much more refined and relaxed.
"Someday Our Love Will Sell Us Out" is an outwardly-psychedelic number, with guitars arching high into the sky, violin turning cartwheels, sitar opening your third eye, and a trail of echo trailing out behind its space caravan. Whilst there's still an oddness to the composition —the 'breakdown' in the bridge feels like a very deliberate misstep— mostly this feels like one big cosmic jammer.
