Its front-cover is a hideous eyesore, it was apparently influenced by (gulp) "roots reggae," and it's one of 2013's most anticipated albums. Mosquito, the fourth album for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, already feels like one of the indie-music events of the year, and it ain't even out yet. And not for months.
Mosquito will be released April 16, via Interscope. It was half-produced by Nick Launay, and half by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. Except for one song, which was produced by DFA Records/LCD Soundsystem don James Murphy. Watch the obligatory teaser trailer to learn almost nothing else.
"It's a return to form, there's more guitars and more bass. It has more moodier and tripped-out songs than you've ever heard from us," YYYs singer Karen O offered, in a recent interview. "You might catch some roots reggae and minimalist psychedelia influences in there."
Oh, and, as for that Garbage Pail Kids-influenced cover: it's by Korean artist Beomsik Shimbe Shim. Opinion is already sharply divided as to whether it's awesome or horrendous. I'm leaning much more towards the latter...
