Free Music Monday: Lisa Germano "...And So On"

By December 18, 2012

Follow me on:

No one can make a lyrical et cetera sound quite so profound as Lisa Germano. Repeating the titular refrain of "...And So On," she adds the suggestive ellipses to the verses that have preceded it. Those verses are the moments of breathy, pained, syllable-careful poetry that Germano has long sketched with.

"I'm sad because I love/I love you every day/haunted/broken," Germano sings, in one verse, over a backing that will be familiar to long-time fans: rippling piano figures, random snippets of ambient noise, toys squeaking, cats miaowing; a trail of sonic scribbling that makes the songs take on a kind of dreamlike surrealism; all this added noise the fog of dreaming.

"...And So On" marks the first taste from Germano's forthcoming ninth album, No Elephants. It's a really good LP, too; though that's hardly news, given that she's never made a bad one. But fans of classic 4AD discs like Geek the Girl and Excerpts from a Love Circus will be pleased; as will anyone into slow and sad songs, or records that reward repeat listens.
