Sufjan Stevens Drops Christmas Hip-Hop Mixtape

By December 12, 2012

Follow me on:

Sufjan Stevens is already the king of indie Christmas records, having put out not one, but two five-CD box-sets of seasonal songs. But, if any questions lingered about Stevens' devotion to the cause of non-awful yuletide jams, he's just answered them.

As a companion to his recently-released Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas, Vols. 6-10 extravaganza, Stevens has just turned loose a hip-hop mixtape of the box-set, winningly titled Chopped and Scrooged. The free-to-download (or, indeed, stream) set finds a bunch of producers (including Fol Chen, Son Lux, and John Dieterich of Deerhoof) chopping up Silver & Gold songs, with guest rappers (including Busdriver, Heems, and Kitty Pryde) spitting over the top.

Chopped and Scrooged comes with Sufjan in the middle of his ridiculously-named Surfjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant On Ice tour. In 2012, apparently Stevens' "creepy Christmas feeling" is particularly potent.

Chopped and Scrooged Track List:
1. Heems, "The Child With the Star on His Head" (produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof)
2. The Pro Letarians, "Dream Catcher"
3. Mr. Kinetik and Tony Styxx, "Cool Like Jack"
4. (Charles) Book&Record, "Black Christmas" [ft. Tada!]
5. Busdriver, "Ding-a-ling-a-ring-a-ling" (produced by Son Lux)
6. Nicky Da B, "Xmas in the Room" (produced by Oliver Blank)
7. Kitty Pryde, "Implants & Yankee Candles" (produced by Fol Chen)
8. Electric iLL, "Blue Baktun"
9. DMA and Oreo Jones, "Xmas Woes"
