If you're a music lover, it's hard not to be a Christmas hater. It may be a time for cheer, but Christmas is also a time for tortured ears; public spaces piping in an array of tired and tragic traditionals and noxious jingles as they attempt to convince you to blow your dough on ersatz crap and landfill fodder.

But, in the right hands Christmas music can be as powerful as the idea of Christmas itself; making the crash commercialism of the season —and its compact-discs— feel like a distant, unpleasant memory. Hearing Sufjan Stevens, Sam Mickens, Josh T. Pearson (pictured!), or Timbre tackle the sounds of the season is not too far off having a religious experience, after all.

So, for those either sentimental or suspicious of the season: here's a list of albums that help to counter the associations of Christmas with crappy music. Slug another egg-nog and slip away into a better mood: here's the Top 20 Alternative Christmas Albums...
