So, let's backtrack: Wild Nothing's second LP, Nocturne, is delightful. It finds Jack Tatum erected another shrine to classic indie-jangle and the atmospheric airiness of 4AD in the '80s. Director Matthew Amato, when offered the opportunity to direct a video for the LP, sent three tracks Williams' way, and she chose "Paradise" as the one she wanted to work on.
From there, Williams went to New York's Rare Book Room studios and recorded her reading of the passage from Murdoch's A Word Child; which now sounds evocatively throughout the extended interlude in the middle of the glimmering, swimming, spiraling pop-song.
The video arrives with Wild Nothing on tour in Europe, and with a set of debut Australian shows lined up for next year. In an interview with Tatum, he told me about the making of Nocturne. And, in particular, confirmed his indie-music-lovin' rep...
"There were definitely a lot of things we used as reference points for [Nocturne]," Tatum said. "In the studio we'd listen to the Beach Boys, David Bowie, Tones On Tail, The Church, tons of Fleetwood Mac. There was a lot more that went into this album, whereas [2010's Gemini] was looking, pretty specifically, at this classic handful of bands: The Smiths were huge, Cocteau Twins were huge, Joy Division, New Order, The Cure; all those big ones that people spotted pretty obviously..."
