James' recorded, engineered, and produced the album himself, playing every instrument. In the press-release announcing the existence of Regions of Light and Sound of God, James explained, of the record: "I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time. Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future, if that makes any sense--like a hazy dream that a fully-realized android or humanoid capable of thought might have when it reminisces about the good old days of just being a simple robot."
First single "Know 'Til Know" shows James is straying ever further from that classic My Morning Jacket grain silo sound, creating a strange sound-world of '60s grooviness and atmospheric crackle looped in a digital way; like he's been listening both to classic Atlantic R&B and '90s Mo'Wax trip-hop.
It certainly piques the interest for what his fantastically-titled LP might be up to; suggesting that the genre-jumping kookiness of recent My Morning Jacket records has been shelved for something more singular and coherent.
