New Yorker sweethearts Cults were one of the big breakout stories of 2011, their self-titled LP filled with girl-group revivalism, ear-candy melodies, lo-fi hazing, and samples of the Reverend Jim Jones.
They spent their breakout year on the road, too: diminutive —yet mightily-piped!— singer Madeline Follin estimating they played 230 shows and went through eight(!) drummers in 2011. They're keeping up that pace in 2012: with months of shows already booked across two hemispheres.
Cults are also, already, at work on their follow-up LP. Speaking to Follin last week —in advance of their Australian shows, of course— she talked about the next Cults LP thusly:
"Overall, on the next record, everything is going to be a little bit darker, that's the sense I'm getting from what we've been working on. Definitely going into a darker direction, and moving away from the happy, poppyness that everyone talks about," Follin said.
"[That darkness[ has always been there. The first song we wrote was 'Go Outside,' and that sort of set the tone for everything that we do. The fact that it's [even darker] might come from a lot of what we've been listening to: Portishead, MF Doom, DJ Shadow and things like that. When we were writing the first album, we were listening to much happier things like Patience & Prudence, the Shangri-la's, old girl-group records. It's all just a natural progression of our tastes changing, us touring a lot, and figuring out more what we want to be doing."
