On opening, they take on "The Christmas Waltz" with pretty much a solitary acoustic guitar and Zooey Deschanel's pipes; the starlet's take seemingly more drawn from the Karen Carpenter version than the Frank Sinatra one.
That pared-back sound seems to suggest a desire for their Christmas record to harken back to 'simpler times'; although pining for past longplaying commercial cash-ins isn't quite as poignant as the music suggests.
But it sounds both sugary and sad, which any good seasonal music should. And the best bit is, as always, the "and this song of mine/in three-quarter time" couplet, which is a totally meta- moment for a modern-day hymnal.
