It would've been awesome to hear Elizabeth Harper cooing and caroling like a young Madonna over a bank of blown-out synths, but, instead, this "Silent Night" plays it so very, very straight. Dutifully, it's reverent to the point of mock-holiness: a hymn for humankind sung —even in the face of lyrics like "'round yon virgin"— with no notes of transgression.
And, unto itself, it's beautiful. For those who hear it, a whole host of memories can come flooding back. Perhaps, even, it'll touch people on a religious level. But for those seeking radical reinterpretations of the seasonal standards, Class Actress's "Silent Night" will sound very standard.
