On his debut Cloud Nothings LP, Cleveland teenager Dylan Baldi harkened back to a '90s he barely remembered; effectively reviving the bubblegum punk of, like, early Blink-182 for hipster nostalgists everywhere.
Yet, when Baldi cited bands like The Minutemen and Hüsker Dü as heroes, he showed he wasn't merely a punk kid, but a student of the American underground. The second Cloud Nothings LP, Attack on Memory, looms a possible huge shift for Baldi's band, and "No Future/No Past" lays that out from the beginning.
For starters, it starts with a piano. Then it stalks and snarls at a less-than-exuberant clip, before exploded into screams in a frenetic end. This time, the sound is more reminiscent of, like, Slint and Rodan. And, given Steve Albini recorded Attack on Memory, that truly may be from whom Baldi's taking his cues.
