Earlier this year, Minneapolis-based electro duo Elite Gymnastics flipped a pair of free EPs online: Ruin 1 found them evoking old-school rave and early-'90s house-pop, then Ruin 2 found them deconstructing those same songs, stripping away the rhythm and exploring them as ghostly, witch-house seances.
Now, the EPs are getting officially reissued, and to accompany such Acéphale are assembling Ruin 3, a disc of remixes. Wonderfully, they've sourced How to Dress Well's Tom Krell to do one such remix; though the crooner would never do something so prosaic as merely 'remix'.
Here, Krell covers "Here, In Heaven 2," and reworks it as an R&B power-ballad set solely to a church organ. "What happens to us if we accept that I'm unfixable?" Krell wonders, voice frothy and soulful and doused in copious reverb; and, here, he sounds as if staging a séance for a dead relationship; trying to stir the specter of past happiness back from beyond.
