You can feel the (or, at least, my) excitement in the air for the forthcoming third Grimes album. And "Oblivion," the lead single for Visions, is ratcheting said excitement up a few more notches. The way-hot jam catches Claire Boucher at her most gloriously melodic, an insistent synth pulse rippling whilst her keening voice cascades in waves.
Weirdly, I can't get the thought of "Oblivion" as perfect jogging soundtrack out of my head; due, I guess, to its insistent, slow-and-steady electronic rhythm. But maybe it's the lyrics suggesting such: "When you're running by yourself it's hard to find someone to hold your hand," Boucher lisps, in a genuinely touching verse. "I need someone else/to look into my eyes and tell me 'girl you've know you've gotta watch your health.'"
I want to throw "Oblivion" on unending repeat and run like the wind, carefree and buoyant, feet keeping time whilst my lungs gasp along with those pitch-shifted vocals and my heartbeat hits the basslines. Run until sweat runs down my cheeks like streams of salty tears, weeping for the genius of Grimes; tears shed, pavement pounding, body exercised in benediction of her health. Take care, girl, before you end up like this.
Grimes, "Oblivion"
