Mazzy Star Back With New Single

By October 20, 2011

Follow me on:

"It's true," Hope Sandoval said in 2009, "we still exist." She was talking about Mazzy Star, the slow-burning duo she and David Roback piloted to crazy popularity in the '90s, before vanishing completely circa 1997.

Sandoval was telling the truth, it turns out. After fifteen years of effective inactivity, Mazzy Star will release a new single on October 31. Happy Hallowe'en. "Common Burn" b/w "Lay Myself Down," is the single in question; it's out digitally, with a seven-inch due to follow, via the band's own label, Rhymes of an Hour.

These two songs are exciting enough in and of themselves, but maybe it's the tip of the Mazzy-Star-comeback iceberg. Sandoval said, back in that 2009 interview (with Rolling Stone), "we're almost finished [with the record]. But I have no idea what that means." Maybe, now, we all have an idea: the fourth Mazzy Star LP could be getting released in 2012...
