Cibo Matto Reform, Tour, Plot New LP

Follow me on:

Cibo Matto, those baffling and charming Japanese emigres who issued the awesome Viva La Woman! LP way back in 1996, have officially reformed. The duo, Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda, played their first show in a decade for a benefit for Japan back in March, alongside Yoko Ono, John Zorn, and Sonic Youth.

The reunion sparked back that old flame, and now the band are back, set to toss together a run of summer shows in the North America, including a date supporting synth pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. And, they're currently working on new material, with designs on recording the band's third album.

After breaking up ten years ago, Hatori and Honda have each issued many solo records; Hatori exploring Brazilian pop and Honda bedding down in New York's experimental scene. But neither have achieved anywhere near the level of acclaim of their prior band.

Cibo Matto have themselves a new website —www.yeahbasicallycibomatto.com— and there you can score more ongoing info on their reunion, and watch videos of their first shows back together. And, if you've got four more minutes to kill: Michel Gondry's video for Cibo Matto's "Sugar Water" is still one of the greatest promos ever...
