Montréal's Grimes is all kinds of colossally awesome. The work of Québécois wunderkind Claire Boucher, Her two self-released, freely-downloadable 2010 LPs, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, melt my face, my mind, and my heart, every time. The latter was, on the close of last year, safely ensconced in this lil' website's best albums of 2010 countdown.
Thus, when time came to cobbled together my first, super-early list of Bands to be sure to witness at SXSW, way back in January (which, you must admit, already feels aeons ago), Grimes was at the top of my list.
Now, SXSW is here, and, good lord, if you're in Austin, go see Grimes ASAP!
Coinciding with what could well be a coming out party for Miss Boucher is the news of an imminent split 12-inch with fellow Montréal warped-R&B-warbler d'Eon. Due out in April on LA label Hippos in Tanks, the split record, Dark Bloom, finds Grimes kicking into bright, brilliant new territories; her strange marriage of grime, goth, dream-pop, R&B, and abstract-electro truly coming together into something magical; her songs sinister séances with melodies incandescent.
I can't fight the feeling that Grimes is about to go big-time; like, maybe she's to be the 2011 equivalent to last year's Zola Jesus coming-out-party.
