Name: Crocodiles
From: San Diego, California
Story: From the dark underbelly of Southern California
Sound: Delay, delay, delay

Calling your debut disc Summer of Hate is sure making a statement. And for Crocodiles —a No Age-endorsed duo from San Diego— they're out to represent the dark, depressed underbelly of sunny Southern California. Formed by 'Sir' Charles Rowell and Brandon Welchez, former members of homoerotic art-punks The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Crocodiles are a representation of the "alienation and frustration" of living in a sleepy, dreary, affluent military town that just happens to be bathed in sunshine.

Like fellow SD hype-magnet Wavves or New Yorker hipster Crystal Stilts, Crocodiles play stylish, stripped down, stoned, droned-out garage-music awash in reverb. Drawing liberally from delay-drenched '80s UK acts Spacemen 3 and The Jesus and Mary Chain, Summer of Hate, is, despite its menacing title and shadowy tone, a strangely sweet listen. Songs like "Young Drugs," "Here Comes the Sky," and, especially, "Sleeping with the Lord" tap into Spacemen 3's reverent love of gospel devotionals, yet strip away the bombast and find an eerie, romantic, dusty quality just as reminiscent of jukebox standards.

Summer of Hate is due for an April release on Fat Possum (Wavves, Andrew Bird), and from here 'til then 'til forever into the thereafter, Crocodiles will be rolling out on the road, introducing themselves to the citizens of the United States of America one show at a time.
